How to Edit an AI-Written Book: A Five-Pass Process

Prepare an editorial baseline

Freeze the draft version and gather the approved book brief, outline, source pack, terminology, and manuscript promises. Editing without these references can make prose smoother while moving the book away from its intended reader.

Create an issue log with manuscript location, defect type, severity, decision, and verification status. Preserve completed sections when a problem is localized.

Pass 1: Structure

Move, combine, split, or remove material before polishing sentences. Structural changes invalidate downstream line edits.

Pass 2: Substance and reader value

Check tone and assumed knowledge against the intended reader. A beginner book should define necessary terms; an expert book should not spend pages repeating basics.

Pass 4: Prose, voice, and repetition

Remove inflated introductions, empty transitions, repeated conclusions, uniform paragraph rhythms, and phrases that say the same thing several ways. Vary structure because the thinking requires it, not to disguise the use of AI.
